Dane County Board Recognizes Veterans Day

At last night’s Dane County Board of Supervisors, the Board recognized Veterans Day, November 11, 2024.

 

Initially observed as Armistice Day in 1918, Veterans Day was designated a federal holiday in 1954. Whether it be recognized on the federal or county level, this day honors veterans of all wars, recognizing their patriotism, dedication to the country, and readiness to serve and sacrifice. In March of this year, Supervisors voted to pass 2023 OA-073, making Veterans Day an official Dane County holiday for all Dane County employees to observe.

 

The resolution presented to the Board emphasizes that 350,000 veterans in the State of Wisconsin, and an estimated 23,000 of those veterans reside in Dane County; leading the Board to express “its utmost respect, admiration, and gratitude for the veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces living in Dane County and elsewhere who have selflessly served our country and this community.”

 

The resolution also emphasizes the importance of Operation Green Light, a NACo initiative, and encourages counties, parishes and boroughs “to show appreciation and support for veterans and raise awareness of veterans’ issues by illuminating buildings with a green light from November 4-11, 2024.”

 

Supervisor Boetcher (District 25) said of Veterans Day, “Veterans Day is about thanking Veterans, and the best way we can continue to do that is to support the Veterans Service Office of Dane County.  We guaranteed retirement and healthcare for those veterans for their years of service, and it is the VSO that makes that happen.”
