Dane County Board Chair Analiese Eicher is highlighting the importance of Labor Day, a day that is observed annually the first Monday of the month of September.

September 6, 2021 is Labor Day this year, a federally recognized day to honor and recognize the American labor movement. The holiday was recognized by the federal government 127 years ago in 1894.

"This year especially we need to take a moment to recognize our employees and their hard work and commitment," said Eicher. "Our employees have always gone above and beyond in their work. The last year and a half has been particularly taxing on everyone and yet no one has wavered. Their commitment to their jobs and the residents of the county needs to be celebrated."

Dane County government is closed on Monday, September 6 to recognize the day.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker".

"I hope everyone can recognize the role our labor force plays in each of our lives. This year, I challenge everyone to take a moment to recognize how far we’ve come and the important work done every day" said Eicher.
